Grouping of eight. Measure 10.5”. Six are marked as being pattern number 02355 (fancy border pattern, floral centers). There is one plate with the same border pattern but no flowers to the center – its number is 02357. The eighth plate does not match – it has flowers to the center and border, and there’s no number on the back.
The green 02355 and the single 02357 both have the smaller oval marks. The other five 02355’s have the larger oval marks (Aelteste Hutschenreuther Hohenberg). The two smaller oval marks do not contain the word aelteste. The eighth plate that doesn’t match has a larger oval mark and it’s also marked Madeleine Germany. I think they date from around 1950 to 1970 – you all know their age better than I do. Vintage but not antique.
The traditional blue plate has a 3/8” chip to the bottom of the outside edge. There are no other chips to the plates. No cracks and no repairs.
The chipped traditional blue plate looks to be the most used in the grouping – the blue is distractingly dulled and has an ugly cloudy discoloration throughout – evident areas of scratching.
The lighter blue plate has a crackled irritation throughout the blue. There’s a 1/4" scratch to the center. The light blue has a pinhead bite to the surface along with a 1/4" scratch (white showing).
The cobalt blue plate has areas of light scratching and dullness that I recognized under a bright light.
The plates have minor scratching here and there, related surface wear. There’s varying levels of gold loss, fading and dullness. There’s dirtiness, some need a detailed cleaning. There’s also crudeness.
I think the most noticeable amount of gold loss and fading is to the green plate. The single 02357 has quite an evident amount of gold loss as well, especially to the center. The oddball plate (the one that doesn’t match) has truly ugly tarnish to the gold, badly discolored. The gold to this plate also has scratching throughout.
The edge of the oddball plate has a 4” area of maker related crudeness – with a light glare, you can recognize that it’s globby and wavy. It’s an annoying area of crudeness. The center purple flower looks faded. The underside edge of this plate has several nicks, bites and those types of blemishes – definitely has the most wear to the underside edge.
I think the intention with this grouping was to hang the six matching plates on the wall in a circle with the non-floral plate in the center. The eighth plate probably doesn’t really belong in this grouping, but it’s all from the same estate, so I figured it was best to keep the collection together.
